Guts Update - New Moves, Awakening & Combos

The 2026 Strikeborn update is the Guts update. After months of being described as “almost complete” with an unfinished ultimate, Black Swordsman now has a full base kit, new direction variants, and a proper awakening transformation. This page covers everything that changed and what it means for the tier list.

This is not a balance patch. It is a content drop that turned an incomplete-feeling kit into a complete one.

What the update added

New base kit tools:

  • Dagger: Throwable with aim assistance. Explosive properties. Side-dash and held input variants. Can combo extend after ragdoll. Risk: self-damage if placed carelessly.
  • Arm cannon: Fires an explosion. Approximately 25 damage at close range, approximately 15 at long range. Direction variants (Space / S input) create movement-plus-launch sequences. Interacts with the first move for advanced routes.
  • Repeater: Multi-shot ranged attack with directional variants. Can be blocked or parried.

Directional variants:

Every new tool has variants based on direction input (forward, back, air). This is the direction system that Strikeborn inherited from its platform-fighter roots. The dagger changes timing and trajectory. The arm cannon changes damage and behavior.

Awakening transformation:

The awakening state goes beyond a visual swap:

  • New M1 animations with multidirectional behavior.
  • Changed run animation and front-facing movement effects.
  • Carnage Grip as a fast dash attack.
  • Slash sequence that creates follow-up opportunities for Carnage Grip.
  • New uppercut behavior.

Why this matters for the roster

Before the update, Guts was described as “complete but with an unfinished ultimate.” The awakening was a promise, not a feature. The 2026 update delivered the promise.

The tier list implications:

  • Guts now has more neutral tools than before. The dagger and arm cannon give him mid-range pressure that did not exist in the pre-2026 build.
  • The awakening gives him a second mode that changes how he approaches fights.
  • Both complete characters (Yuji, Guts, and now Sukuna) are S tier. The gap between them is playstyle, not completeness.

New playstyle options

The 2026 update gave Guts players more ways to play:

Mid-range dagger control: Instead of walking into melee range, Guts can now apply dagger pressure from further away. Force a reaction, then convert.

Arm cannon finish: The arm cannon rewards knowing your range. Close range for burst damage, long range for safer pressure.

Awakening rushdown: The Carnage Grip dash attack and slash sequence give awakening Guts a more aggressive neutral than base Guts. Use it when the base kit is not enough.

What has not changed

  • The third-hit uppercut / fourth-hit slam structure of the M1 string is consistent with pre-2026 behavior.
  • The look-down kick tech from early showcases still works.
  • Wall jumps and jump pads are unchanged.
  • The sword’s range is still the core identity.

What to lab first

The priority order from the Guts guide:

  1. Dagger throw and placement: Where to place it, how to avoid self-damage.
  2. Arm cannon range behavior: Close versus long range and when to use each.
  3. Direction variants: Each tool in neutral, forward, back, and air.
  4. Awakening activation and Carnage Grip route: When to transform, how to confirm into Carnage Grip.
  5. Defensive interactions: What can be blocked, parried, or countered.

Tier list status

Both complete characters (Yuji and Guts) remain S tier. The 2026 update did not make Guts better than Yuji — it made him more flexible. The tier list will not change until a third complete character ships.

For Sukuna’s ranking, see the tier list. Sukuna is the third complete character and will be evaluated alongside Yuji and Guts.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for Strikeborn early-access players.

What did the 2026 update add to Guts?

New base kit tools: a throwable dagger with aim assistance and explosive properties, an arm cannon with close and long-range variants, directional input variants on both tools, and a full awakening transformation with new M1s, Carnage Grip, and slash sequences.

Does Guts still have an unfinished ultimate?

No. The 2026 update delivered a full awakening transformation with Carnage Grip and slash sequences. The "unfinished ultimate" status from early showcases is no longer accurate.

Can Guts hurt himself with the dagger?

Yes. The explosive dagger can damage Guts if placed too close. Create space between the trap and your position, or trigger it after dashing away.

Is Guts now better than Yuji?

No. Both are S tier. The 2026 update made Guts more flexible with new tools and awakening, but Yuji is still faster and easier to confirm. The difference is playstyle, not strength.

Does Sukuna change the tier list?

Sukuna is the third complete character and will be evaluated on the tier list. Both Yuji and Guts remain S tier. Sukuna's ranking depends on community testing and matchup data.
