How to Play Yuji

Vessel Sorcerer is Strikeborn’s Yuji Itadori kit: cursed-energy fists, a fast M1 family, and the air-combo identity the whole game is selling. If you are coming from Jujutsu Shenanigans, do not paste those combos. This is a different engine with direction variants, wall jumps, and a map that will throw you into a ravine. Use this lesson with the shared combat page and the Yuji roster entry.

Why Yuji is the default first main

His M1s look faster than Guts’ in every public clip. Faster hands mean easier confirms into the uppercut route, which is the whole point of Strikeborn. He is also the character most battlegrounds players already have muscle memory for, which is a blessing and a trap: you will try to play him like a ground-string character and miss the air layer.

Pick Yuji first if you:

  • Want to learn the game, not a heavy sword.
  • Play mobile or controller and need a more forgiving swing timing.
  • Plan to lab air routes this week rather than next month.

Pick Guts instead if you specifically want range and slower, meatier hits. Both are complete. Do not park on Jinchuriki because the portrait looks like Naruto.

What footage actually shows

From creator tests and the early-access showcases:

  • A combo-friendly M1 string that can convert upward.
  • A kick that also functions as a counter (Manji-style) when timed against an incoming hit.
  • Air follow-ups after an uppercut. Holding jump while pressing a skill was used in related workshop clips to stay in the air; confirm the same habit in this client.
  • Skills that are not a 1:1 JJS copy. Learn slot order in this game.

We will not invent damage numbers. Lab a dummy or a patient friend and write your own confirm lengths.

Gameplan in one paragraph

In neutral, walk with dash pips in the bank. Use M1s to win the scramble, leave the string on the launcher hit, and take him to the air. If they mash a skill on wakeup, hold the counter kick. If they run, do not dump three dashes; cut them off with a jump pad or a wall bounce. If a third player appears, dump toward the waterfall instead of finishing a 15-hit clip.

Starter routes to lab (not gospel)

Notation uses slot numbers. Confirm each slot in your client.

  • Ground confirm: M1 string into the uppercut hit, stop, jump-follow, aerial M1.
  • Counter convert: Counter kick on a dash-in, then immediately M1. If the counter also knocks up, treat it as an air starter.
  • Pad start: Jump pad, falling M1, then a skill you have tested as an air hit.
  • Edge: Same ground confirm, but end with a down-slam variant if you are already at the ravine lip.

If a route dies in the air, you either pressed the down slam hit by accident or you dashed too late. Watch the combat notes on hit three versus hit four.

Matchup notes versus Guts

Guts has longer M1s. Do not contest his max range on open stone. Force him into ruins or jump over the swing and punish recovery. His Carnage Grip style grab (see the Guts lesson) is a reason to keep a counter in your pocket. In the air, Yuji’s speed still matters, but Guts players who learned the look-down kick tech will try to pop you off the wall. Save a dash for that.

Habits that get Yuji players killed

  • Mashing a full four-hit string when you wanted an uppercut convert.
  • Countering as a walk-up.
  • Spending all dash pips to approach a Guts who is already holding range.
  • Using the loudest cinematic skill in a 100-player courtyard.
  • Ignoring wall jumps because “Yuji is a punch character.” The map does not care.

After you can convert

Read starter picks only to confirm you did not misread the early-access meta. Then watch one good Yuji clip (the video in the middle of this page is a full access session, not a frame bible) and copy camera movement, not random key spam. Pair this lesson with controls if your counter bind is still a mystery.

When a patch adds the rest of an awakening kit or changes the counter, we will flag it on Updates. Until then, Yuji is the character you use to learn Strikeborn’s air game so the second complete sword character feels like a style choice rather than a panic swap.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for Strikeborn early-access players.

Is Strikeborn Yuji the same as Jujutsu Shenanigans Yuji?

No. Shared anime identity, different engine. Lab this client's slots, air variants, and counter kick instead of pasting JJS combos.

Does Yuji have a counter?

Creator footage treats a kick as a counter as well as a normal. Timing still matters. Confirm the slot in your skill bar.

Is Yuji better than Guts?

Yuji is easier to convert with. Guts has range. Both are complete early-access kits. See the tier list for the current snapshot.

Should I buy early access just for Yuji?

Only if you also want the air-combat sandbox. A free public build is planned after three complete characters. See the early-access guide.
