What the FULL SHOWCASE actually revealed — all moves, variants, and the ultimate abilities.

Variants and Ultimate Guide

A full showcase posted on August 27, 2026 gave the clearest look at Strikeborn’s actual move variety: skill slots with air variants, direction-hold variants, and what the ultimate abilities actually look like in the current build. This page is the structured notes from that footage, organized so you can lab each slot with intention rather than randomly pressing buttons.

Pair this with combat for the shared layer theory, and with the Yuji or Guts character lessons for kit-specific context.

What the showcase confirmed

The FULL SHOWCASE (August 27, 2026) tested one character through every skill slot in multiple contexts. What it showed:

  • At least one air variant confirmed for slot 1 and slot 4.
  • Direction-hold inputs change at least some skills.
  • An ultimate / awakening ability exists and has a visual effect.
  • The showcase subject appeared to be a sword character (Guts kit) given the Dragon Slayer silhouette and cape cloth.

This page documents what the video shows, not invented frame data. Confirm every slot in your own client.

Skill variant types in Strikeborn

Air variants

Some skill slots change when used in the air versus grounded. The showcase demonstrated this clearly for slots 1 and 4. The practical rule: every slot is a variable, not a fixed button. If you only use a skill grounded, you are using half the tool.

Lab method: take one character, stand on flat ground, press slot 1 through 4. Then jump and press each slot. Then jump and hold a direction while pressing each slot. Write down anything that looked different.

Direction-hold variants

Holding forward, back, or a vertical direction while pressing a skill can change the output. This is common in 2D fighters and platform fighters. The showcase did not label which slots respond to which holds, but the presence of direction variants was confirmed.

The practical implication: Strikeborn is not a “press 1 for the same clip every time” game. The direction you hold matters.

Lab method for direction variants:

  • Neutral, no hold: press slots 1-4.
  • Hold forward: press slots 1-4.
  • Hold back: press slots 1-4.
  • Hold up (jump): press slots 1-4.
  • After an uppercut in mid-air: repeat all holds.

Counter variants

At least one slot functions as both a counter and a normal skill depending on whether an attack connects. Guts showcase footage treated slot 4 as a counter if it hit an incoming attack, and as a regular swing if it did not. This is a high-skill tool because it is not a complete whiff if you guess wrong.

Ultimate abilities

The showcase showed an ultimate / awakening ability with a visual effect. For the Guts kit, the early-access showcases admitted the ultimate was still unfinished. The FULL SHOWCASE appeared to show the ultimate in a more complete state, but this needs independent verification.

What appears to be true:

  • Ultimate abilities exist as a separate skill slot.
  • They have a distinct visual effect (likely character-specific).
  • The awakening transforms the character model or adds a visible layer.

Do not list the ultimate as a reliable win condition until multiple sources confirm the same behavior.

Variant lab routine

For each complete character (Yuji or Guts):

  1. Grounded, neutral: slots 1-4, note the animation.
  2. Grounded, hold forward: slots 1-4, compare to neutral.
  3. Grounded, hold back: slots 1-4, compare to neutral.
  4. Jump, neutral: slots 1-4, compare to grounded.
  5. Jump, hold forward/back: slots 1-4.
  6. After uppercut (mid-air): slots 1-4.
  7. Against a dummy attack (counter test): slot 4 if it is a counter slot.

Write down what is a launcher, what is a counter, what is a movement tool, and what is a finisher. Do not assume TSB or JJS naming — this is a different engine.

Why variants matter more than damage numbers

A slot that changes based on air or direction is effectively two tools in one button. Players who only use the grounded neutral version are playing half the game. The players who can read a direction input while in a combo and select the correct variant will always have more options.

For the full combat layer, see combat. For character-specific variant notes, see the Yuji and Guts lessons. For movement tools that interact with variants (dashes, wall jumps), see controls.

When a patch changes variant behavior, this page and the combat guide will both update so they do not contradict each other.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for Strikeborn early-access players.

How many variants does each skill slot have?

Confirmed: at least one air variant and one direction-hold variant per slot. The exact number for each character needs individual lab work.

Is the ultimate ability finished?

Early showcases said Guts ultimate was unfinished. The FULL SHOWCASE appeared to show a more complete version. Verify in your client before listing it as a win condition.

Are direction variants the same as holding back in fighting games?

Yes — holding a direction (forward, back, up) while pressing a skill changes the output in Strikeborn, similar to 2D fighters.

Why does counter behavior matter?

A counter that also works as a normal skill is not a complete whiff if you guess wrong. It is a higher-skill, higher-reward option.
